For the past few months, North India has been witnessing several minor earthquake, especially in the region of Delhi. But no one suspected that 12th February 2021 would see an earthquake of such a magnitude. The epicentre has been found to be Afghanisthan (Hindu Kush region), hitting with a scale of 7.5 on the Richter scale, after a minor shock of 4.9. As per the National Centre for Seismology, at near about 10.30 pm Friday night, Tajikistan recorded 6.2 on the scale, and immediately parts of North India, such as Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, and Uttarakhand felt powerful shakes.

Earthquake at the other side of the border:

The depth of the earthquake has been suspected to be approximately 86 kilometres (Tajikistan-Xinjiang border). Fortunately, there hasn’t been any loss of lives or properties in Pakistan, where the magnitude was 6.4. Other regions that felt the tremors along with North India are Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Pakhtunkhwa.

Condition of North India:

No damage has occurred to North India and the localities reported to be safe. Residents ran out of their buildings to avoid any further harm. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted last night, “Earthquake tremors felt in Delhi. Praying for everyone’s safety.”

“No reports of any damage so far in Amritsar or other parts of Punjab following the #earthquake. Top officials of
@PunjabPoliceInd & local administration are keeping a close watch on the situation. Praying for everyone’s safety.”, said Capt. Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister of Punjab.

Tweets came like a massive flood, making #earthquake on number 1 trending within hours.  People especially from Jammu & Kashmir admitted that they did not feel this kind of earthquake since 2005. They literally thought something massive is going to happen and so waited further for the aftershocks. Renowned personalities and politicians also showed their concern via Twitter.
