On Monday, ESPN issued a short response to the UFC President Dana White, who on Friday called a well-known MMA reporter, Ariel Helwani a “douche.” Dana White called Ariel Helwani a “douche” for his Instagram post when he posted a video responding to Gina Carano’s controversial tweet.
The Story so far.
Ariel Helwani posted an eight minutes long video on his Instagram responding to a controversial tweet made by Gina Carano regarding Jews. He was initially surprised by the tweet made by Caranao and was disappointed in Caranao as he was Jewish and also a friend of hers. Gina Carano’s tweet was regarding Jews living in the period of Nazi Germany which is seen as a conservative comment in today’s America and it naturally drew plenty of criticism for Americans and across the globe. This controversial tweet also led to Caranao being fired from her new Disney show “The Mandalorian”.
Dana White, with whom Helwani was on bad terms, made his Instagram post angry as he thought that he was trying to make an issue of it all for himself.
Colleagues coming to Helwani’s defence
After hearing this comment, many of his ESPN colleagues came to defend him and forced ESPN to release a statement defending Helwani’s video which ESPN came-up with. They released a short statement in The New York post saying: “Ariel is a valued colleague and an exceptional MMA reporter. His record speaks for itself.” this statement came to be called an ‘Under-statement’ as it didn’t even mention White or his controversial comment, which was not a surprise as ESPN and UFC are corporate partners since 2019.
